Waitaki Valley

The Waitaki Valley lies in the centre of the South Island and is exactly halfway between the Equator and the South Pole. (45th Parallel South)

As well as being an up and coming Wine Region, other attractions and activities are drawing Tourists and Locals to the Valley. These include:

  • ALPS2OCEAN CYCLE TRAIL – 301km journey from Aoraki/Mount Cook to Oamaru, home of limestone architecture at it’s best + much much more!

  • FISHING – TROUT/SALMON

  • GLIDING – Omarama, home of world-class gliding.

  • WIND SURFING/ YACHTING/BOATING

  • GEOLOGICAL + FOSSIL DISCOVERY – “Vanished World Centre” (Duntroon) provides exhibitions + displays of fossils + geology from our region.

    MAORI ROCK ART (Used by pre Europeon Maori for shelter while hunting up the valley)

 

Anatini rocks

ANATINI FOSSIL SITE: (This site was used to Film Aslam’s Camp in “The Lion, Witch & Wardrobe”. See fossils protruding from the limestone, including baleen whales + shark toothed dolphins.

 

 Elephant Rocks – Limestone boulders varying in sizes from 1-10 metres          across. Likened to a natural “Stonehenge”.
